The application of various acid formulations in feedstuffs is a common strategy to enhance shelf life and microbial stability in intensive poultry and pig farming systems. Organic acids such as formic, propionic, and lactic acids are frequently used due to their antimicrobial properties, which inhibit pathogenic microorganisms (Gaggìa et al., 2013). These acids lower the pH of feed, creating an unfavorable environment for bacteria, molds, and yeasts, thereby reducing spoilage and potential mycotoxin production (Jensen et al., 2014). The efficacy of acid blends depends on their formulation, concentration, and application method; for example, formic acid is highly effective against Salmonella spp. in feed (Kiarie et al., 2013). Acidification can extend the shelf life of feedstuffs by suppressing microbial growth during storage, especially under warm and humid conditions typical in tropical regions (Bikker et al., 2020). Several studies have demonstrated that acid-treated feeds exhibit lower microbial counts compared to untreated controls, indicating improved microbial stability (Córdoba et al., 2018). Furthermore, acid formulations can also improve feed digestibility and nutrient availability, indirectly supporting gut health and reducing pathogen colonization (Józefiak et al., 2013). However, the choice of acid and its concentration must be carefully managed to avoid negative effects on feed palatability and animal performance (Liu et al., 2017). The development of protective acid coatings can enhance the stability and targeted delivery of acids in feed (Gadde et al., 2017). Overall, the strategic use of acid formulations plays a critical role in maintaining feed quality, reducing reliance on antibiotics, and promoting animal health in intensive production systems (Pérez et al., 2019). Future research should focus on optimizing acid combinations and application methods to maximize shelf life and microbial safety (Zhang et al., 2021).
